'Oh please, why can't you live on $10.00 an hour?' That's the question I heard from a young male while bypassing a couple. That made we want to turn around, jump on a nearby hill, and give him a special lecture about reality he'd never forget. Most people I know (that are aligned with the age of the individual who made the above comment) pay at LEAST $600-$700 in rent and utilities. Anything less, and you've probably found an apartment with government subsidizing, often implying substantially lower quality. Which in my strong opinion does NOT count towards being able to 'comfortably live' as everyone should. Then there's some kind of monthly payment - Could be your car, credit card(s), student loans, you name it. That usually runs $300-400.
Though it's worth mentioning that many people I know are now obligated to pay well over $400 per month for student loans alone. Then you have insurance and gas expenses - That's an easy $150-$200.Need a cell phone? If you want to talk to friends/family and be taken seriously, yes you do! Probably looking at a minimum of $50-70.How about food? That's another $150 or well over $200 if you require special or organic products for an allergy/health condition or regularly purchase alcohol. Now for entertainment.
OH wait, no need to bother. Because there isn't anything left. Here's why:Assuming you ARE lucky and able to essentially work full-time, 40 hours per week, for $10.00 an hour, you'll earn $400 per week, OR $1600 per month.Throwing a conservative estimate completely out the window, let's say your total taxes (SS, state, federal, etc.) paid for the year take 15% from your earnings. Now you're down to $1360 cash. Now let's subtract your expenses assuming the BEST case scenario as outlined above.$1360 - 600 - 300 - 150 - 50 - 150 = $110 left at EOM. Here's to hoping everything in your financial life works out perfectly and you don't have others to support OR higher outstanding debts to pay off.Because if your hours were to slip by 5 hours a week - i.e. You are now only working 35 hours per week - you've got to scrape up an extra $60 a month just to get by.I haven't even bothered to dive into the often perceived 'necessary extras' that many enjoy - health care, putting away for retirement, rainy day fund for emergencies, and more. So, why can't we live on $10.00 an hour?Because living in this country requires serious MONEY. Which loses it's value a trickle at a time to inflation.
I worked 40 hours at 8 an hour in college during the summer plus 10 an hour from 6 to 10 at night cleaning. I felt loaded. But $400 a week after taxes is only a lot when you are living at home and someone else is paying those expenses. Try living in the city and paying your way on that and it is tough. Now I earn a good wage but my rent is $3000 a month. Sounds crazy right?
You think I'm living in a mansion right? Think again - move to the big city where you've got a good job.
Have a baby and move into a 3 bedroom (need one for home office) and watch those big expenses come streaming in. I am about to move out from home for the first time. My fianc茅 lives with me in a guest house on my mamas property and we just decided to get engaged.
So we are ready to move out to our first place both as a couple and individually. The place that we are working on getting is $875 for a studio. $75 for some utilities that the partner sets is up with, Probably $100/200 for electricity then $50/100 for cable and Internet service. And then we each have 90ish in cell phone bills and annual Disneyland passes we pay off monthly, totals $70 for us both. And neither of us have a credit card. And he can do on $20 a week ok gas. $100 for food, then we have a cat $25 pet rent and getting another pet after moving for $25 more and then entertainment and dinning $100 altogether and pet food and litter $20/30 for cat food and $15 for litter.
And I probably forgot something but thats most of our budget. And saving for some furniture. And the place we are grabbing has a pool/spa, fitness center, computer room and tennis court, located in Van Nuys, CA (I live in Thousand Oaks, CA now/30mins from van nuys).
Soobing doesn't have to cost a lot if you have a small budget, because you don't have credit cards (have lil credit, don't want a card til I can get a good one) and keep spending on what you only Ned and leave room for fun so that if it ever does get tight, we can always say we made having fun a priority and that's why no matter what, we will get thru things with less stress, learning to just deal with things and live a lil so you don't get depressed or stressed if something does happen. Sad situation in 2013, & even sadder that the CEOs of Wall Street just don't seem to care about anyone but themselves.

They don't seem to realize that the 2% 'raises' most of them are doling out to their employees is simply a waste of time - or that 2% of $30k is $900/year, whereas 2% of $100k is $1,000/year. BIG difference. This is just verification that the rich are getting richer, at the expense of the poor.
How does Wall Street expect the economy to recover if 99% of the workforce can barely survive on what they earn for a 40 hour workweek? Or if you come to Portland you can be around a lot of young hipsters! It rains 9 months out of the year, gray, drizzle, downpour.almost constant for those 9 months! The taxes to live in the city of Portland are outrageous.Last year I got my water/sewer bill and was shocked how high it was. I called the water bureau and was told that we have one of the highest rates in the country (of the combined 2 water/sewer). I asked her why would we since we have so much rain and she really couldn't give me a solid answer. In California, everything is high-tax. My favorite California thing is when the roads don't get fixed, for years, and suddenly the county, city, whatever, needs another 1/2 cent sales tax to fix them.
So, like what happened to all the money you've been taking to fix our roads over the years? At one point, Alameda County had a 10% sales tax, the highest in the state, and they're still clamoring for moar. I'm not conservative, because they've hopped on the crazy bus, but Democrats, who run everything in this state, are just terrible. We'll never vote them out but what a choice, awful or crazy?
And, very often, we get both. Oh, you mean like my 'dear' state of MD.
Tolls and gas tax just went up to repair roads. Water taxes keep going up. For some reason, the state keeps acting surprised when 100+ y/o water pipes burst.Last summer, yet more wooden water pipes were dug up while doing some repair work. I can not confirm this, but I was told that in some places in Baltimore, wood water pipes are still in use.In both cases, my response is 'what, you didn't see this coming and prepare for it?????!!!!!!???! Why the &(%$#% not??? My property taxes are outrageous.
The 'assessed value' increases my property taxes an automatic 3% every year. The only way declining home values can lower taxes is if market value falls below the assessed value, which hasn't happened even in the housing market decline. This is all due to Measure 50 which passed in 1997.I live in the most expensive county for taxes. I dread when my property tax statement shows up in the mail.
I'll let it sit on the counter for a few days before I decide to open it. Indeed Community Notice Content is not continuously monitored and is primarily user-generated or posted by third parties.
